A record number of 565 requests to recruit nurses in France, South America and Morocco has been filed by the CIUSSS de l'Est-de-l'Île-de-Montréal with the Ministry of Health, according to what Radio-Canada has learned. This CIUSSS is the one that oversees the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital, where the nurses held a sit-in this week which led to the closure of the emergency room.

This number corresponds to a increase of more than 200 compared to May 2022 requests for Montreal East. In contrast, the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l’Île-de-Montréal experienced a decline in international recruitment.

The doctor of the CIUSSS de l'Est-de-l'Île-de-Montréal Martine Leblanc admitted yesterday on Radio-Canada that the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital was struggling with a problem of nursing workforce and that the latest crisis was undeniably harming the recruitment of nurses.

At the time of writing these lines, Métro was still waiting for a response from the CIUSSS de l’Est-de-l’Île-de-Montréal.
