A family of Ukrainian refugees expected in Montreal
A first family of Ukrainian refugees will arrive on Sunday, at the end of the day, in Montreal through the community program “Hellenic Hope for Others” .
This program is supported by several organizations, including the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal (CHGM), with the collaboration of MNA for Saint-Laurent Emmanuella Lambropoulos.
A mother and her children aged 17 and 14 are expected at Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau airport around 4:15 p.m., specifies the executive director of CHGM, Denis Kotsoros, reached by telephone.
This program was launched in March to support the Ukrainian community. A poster campaign was carried out in several schools and churches to raise public awareness.
“We collected donations through schools, churches, our community and private organizations. This is our very first action for them. We are proud to be able to provide assistance in these difficult times, says Denis Kotsoros who admits that this system was not easy to set up. In particular, we had to pay for the tickets and find a solution for the accommodation of this family on the island of Montreal.”
This initiative raised more than $8,500, as well as dozens of ;items. “We have nearly 2 tons of clothes and food,” said Mr. Kotsoros. Other families will soon arrive in Montreal as part of this program.
In addition, on May 11, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced 3 ;Federal charter flights to Canada for Ukrainians and their family members. The flight to Montreal is scheduled for May 29.
