A Kahnawake designer at New York Fashion Week
A Mohawk designer, originally from Kahnawake in the south of Montreal, will participate in New York Fashion Week. Karoniénhawe Diabo will travel to the Big Apple on February 10 to present his new collection.
The event is one of the biggest fashion events in the world, with Fashion Weeks in Paris, London and Milan. It allows many emerging designers to promote their creations.
The work of Karoniénhawe Diabo, who is behind the brand She Holds The Sky Designs, draws heavily from Haudenosaunee culture. They incorporate many traditional symbols, such as the wampum (porcelain bead) or the flint.
Other natives from Canada and the United States have shown their collections at New York Fashion Week in the past. The Kahnawake resident is proud to be part of it and intends to highlight the unique character of her creations, influenced by the culture of her community.
We have such a different style, a distinct look, another look at our fashion, she says.
