A state funeral and a highway in the name of Guy Lafleur?

Quebec intends to honor the late Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur in style. The government is in negotiations for a state funeral to be held to commemorate him. Ultimately, Mr. Lafleur's family will decide if they want commemorations of this magnitude.

“It's a whole people who are in mourning, it's normal that all these people can say goodbye to Guy Lafleur. Number 10 will be in our collective memory forever,” Prime Minister François Legault commented during a press conference on Friday afternoon.

Highway 50, which runs along Thurso, town in which Guy Lafleur was born, could also be renamed after him. “It's something we're going to watch. We are open to doing something for this great hero,” said Mr. Legault.

In 2002, a request was filed with the Commission de toponymie to rename Highway 50 in the name of Maurice Richard. No decision had finally been made public on this subject.

A register will be set up on the government website. It will be possible for everyone to write a message commemorating the death of Guy Lafleur. The messages will then be collected and offered to the Lafleur family.

It’s important what he brought for our people. He managed to make us dream, but also to win us games, Stanley Cups. He gave a lot to the people of Quebec.

François Legault considers Guy Lafleur to be the best player in hockey history. He is one of several public figures to pay tribute to him on Friday. Several politicians and former NHL players, as well as the Montreal Canadiens organization, also hailed Guy Lafleur.
