A world of potential in The republic of dreams
In The republic of dreams, there are no actors, but of the inhabitants. Besides, the game is not done by the actors but by the audience.
We speak of the spectators, but in this course ambulatory created by the Theatre Upside down and presented in the context of Québec in all letters, there is nothing passive. “It is in the theatre relational,” explains Benoît Gasnier, one of the three creators behind the project. “With the Theatre Upside down, we work a lot on the relationship that is created with the audience. This is why we have always small gauges, never really more than 60 people at a time,” he continues.
The Sun was right on Thursday with a behind the scenes tour of this theatrical experience, inspired by a short story written by Bruno Schulz. We will attempt here to summarize the essence. On their arrival in the basement of the House of literature, in the area where is located the small stage, the participants will be welcomed by François Lavallée, a storyteller from Montreal, who will participate in his factory of slogans. Per bunch of ten, they will implement then in the locker room, a small dark space where the smells awaken memories. Benedict Gasnier will invite its guests to dust off their clothes before passing into the main area, nestled in the small agora.
At this time, it is Julie’s Mentor, who takes over for offer different games and explorations. There are several small areas : a rose garden where one is invited to re-create the smell of childhood; a place where you can sleep standing up, listening to different audio tapes; a set of twigs where one becomes the architect of clouds… “We really trying to develop a sensory language”, explains François Lavallée. The idea, he explains, is to find a certain creative energy of childhood.

However, it is still there that the first phase of the experiment, which will evolve towards something else, towards the possible creation (or not), the republic of dreams it is all about. We shall say no more to maintain the pleasure of the spectators, but it is a proposal quite unique.
This is Julie’s Mentor, which fell by chance on the text of Schulz, and which has found a fertile ground of exploration. “He has a writing very sensory, you can immerse yourself in like in a movie, with all our body,” she explains. The trio of creators behind the show has made a large site, between France and Montreal, in order to dissect the work, even to draw a common language, through which they have created something new.
