A 26-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following the assault of a priest at Saint Joseph Oratory while he was celebrating Mass on Friday.
Vlad Cristian Eremia was accused Saturday of attempted murder and assault with a weapon. He appeared by videoconference in the afternoon at the courthouse in Montreal. Wearing a blue and white plaid shirt, he only spoke a few words during his brief appearance. He confirmed that he was represented by a legal aid lawyer.
The Crown objected to her release and requested a psychosocial assessment prior to the bail hearing. Attorney Geneviève Bélanger explained that the purpose of this motion was to ascertain the mental state of the accused.
The attack occurred shortly after 8:30. A man walked with a quick and determined step behind the altar, took out a knife and wore it against the 77-year-old priest on at least two occasions. The individual was arrested at the scene.
The authorities do not know the motives of the aggressor. For the moment, there is no indication that the suspect is part of any organization.
The injured priest was discharged from the hospital.
According to a spokeswoman for the religious establishment, Danielle Decelles, Father Claude Grou left the hospital on Friday night. He would be well, given the circumstances.
“My health is good and I’m recovering from my emotions. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has given me messages of support and those around me. It makes me hot and allows me to calmly face these difficult moments, “he said in a statement on Saturday.
According to Ms. Decelles, the usual security measures will be put in place for Sunday Masses. The police will ensure a greater presence in the vicinity of the oratory to reinforce a sense of security among the faithful.
