Hello bike repair aficionados! Your passion could well become your profession thanks to the creation this fall of an attestation of professional studies (AEP) in bicycle mechanics, the very first official professional training in this field in Canada.

The students of the first cohort began their studies at the School of Motorized Equipment Trades of Montreal (EMEMM) on October 14th. Eleven different courses, for a total duration of 645 hours, will be offered to them. Technical research, the customer approach, risk prevention, the overall development of a bicycle are all examples of subjects that will be taught.

At the end of their course, the student will obtain his certificate of professional studies and will be officially a bicycle mechanic, able to ensure the maintenance, diagnostic evaluation, repair and assembly of bicycles. Even the electric bike and the fatbike!

A long-standing project

This training has been “requested for a long time by the industry,” says Mario Héroux, general manager of the EMEMM. CycloChrome, a non-profit organization specializing in bicycle mechanics, is the main instigator of this program.

“For more than nine years now, CycloChrome had been promoting with the CSSDM – the CSDM at the time – the idea of ​​professional training in bicycle mechanics in order to democratize technical knowledge, to have the job recognized as a trade, to provide industry-trained mechanics, to enhance quality standards and the customer experience, and to improve working conditions for mechanics across the province,” reads the website. of the company.   • In Estrie, at SAE Estrie – Sherbrooke sector from November 14 and Magog sector on a date to be determined
  • In Lanaudière, at the CFP Des Moulins from January 16, 2023

  • At CFP Forgescom in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean from November 23
