Casino de Montréal: as the Grand Prix approaches, employees accelerate negotiations

Denouncing working conditions unenviable wages and insufficient wages, the employees of the Montreal casino have given themselves a five-day strike mandate that they can use at “the opportune moment”.

This maneuver, voted 91% by the staff, comes a few weeks before the Grand Prix de Montréal, during which the gaming establishment is experiencing record attendance. This one is on Île Notre-Dame, just like the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit, on which racing cars will roar.

Employees intend to use Formula 1 competition as a lever to speed up negotiations started in June 2022 which are “trampling”.

“Loto-Québec struts around saying it has recorded record profits this year. It’s time to benefit the employees who are getting poorer because of inflation,’says the president of the security workers unit at the Casino de Montreal, Riccardo Scopelleti.

There was a time when working at the casino guaranteed a job with the working conditions you wanted. Today, we are far from that.

Employees demanding an increase corresponding to the increase in the cost of living, as well as an additional dollar per hour. They emphasize that an increase in their income would not only improve the attraction and retention of the profession, but also support their purchasing power, “in the current economic context”.

According to the CSN, Loto-Québec would have made profits of $805.3 million over the period 2022-2023.

“Just last week, the employer proposed that salary bonuses and bonuses be… self-financed through a significant salary reduction for all new hires”, regrets Riccardo Scopelleti.

In response to the departure of employees, Loto-Québec wanted to “inform customers that all activities in Loto-Québec casinos are proceeding normally despite the use of pressure tactics by certain groups of employees”.

“Two comprehensive and generous monetary offers have been tabled at the bargaining table in recent months,” added the group.

Note that the employees of the Casino de Gatineau and Online Games have also built up a bank of five days of strike. Voting will be held over the next few days at casinos in Charlevoix and Mont-Tremblant.
