Andréanne Beaudry La Tribune About twenty demonstrators gathered on Wednesday afternoon in front of the office of the deputy for Saint-François Geneviève Hébert. They expressed, among other things, their dissatisfaction to the Minister of Education regarding the addition of three additional pedagogical days to the school calendar.
“We represent support staff in schools and school service centers and the minister never takes into account, or very rarely, our working conditions”, laments the president of the union of technical and administrative staff of the Center. school services of the Région-de-Sherbrooke, Renée Bibeau.
The Union of technical and administrative personnel of the Center de services scolaire de la Région-de-Sherbrooke (SPTA-CSQ) does not dispute the three pedagogical days granted to teachers, but deplores the fact that at no time Minister Jean-François Roberge consulted with support staff.
The organization of three additional periods of about 10 hours each, during a pandemic, is a real headache.
“The government is abusing our dedication. It's as if he was squeezing the lemon, but it has no more juice, ”said the president of the Federation of School Support Staff (CSQ), Éric Pronovost.
The Vice-President of Financial Affairs and Secretariat of the SPTA-CSQ, Élaine Laurendeau, indicates that the planning of activities is also a real challenge because of the non-existent space available.
These days also represent a loss of salary for certain categories of employees.
“As a midday supervisor, I lose three days of salary. When there are plans for pedagogical days, I have no salary, ”laments Ms. Laurendeau.
Renée Bibeau says that all the constraints related to the pandemic complicate things to provide quality service to students.
“It seems nice to the rest of the population, but when we are in the middle we can see that nothing is working. We do our best and we are there for the children to ensure that nothing happens, but at the same time we would like to be heard, ”emphasizes Élaine Laurendeau.

Ms. Laurendeau recalls that emergency childcare services, at the start of the pandemic, included educational technicians, a few specialized educators, childcare technicians, educators and supervisors.
“With the opening of emergency childcare services, support staff was very important. We gave the best of ourselves in addition to respecting the various health rules. But as soon as the teachers came back to work, we quickly forgot the support staff, ”says Renée Bibeau.
“These are all those people who held the system at arm's length during confinement in the same way as the nurses or orderlies in hospitals”, specifies Élaine Laurendeau.
According to Ms. Bibeau, the Minister of Education changes the rules at any time so that support staff must adapt at all times. “And it's not easy, because we lack everything. “
The support staff are exhausted as are the teachers. “It's not normal at this time of year,” says Renée Bibeau.
She would like to be included in what is called the school team.
“What we ask the Minister of Education is to consult us, to respect us and to value us. And it starts with better working conditions ”, believes the president who affirms that, for the moment, she has nothing to offer interesting to attract the next generation or even to retain it.
