Ethics: other complaints against Fitzgibbon

Quebec's Minister of Economy and Innovation, Pierre Fitzgibbon.

The minister responsible for Montreal, Pierre Fitzgibbon, could be back in hot water. A hunting trip on a private island in Lake Memphremagog earned him further complaints to the Ethics Commissioner of the National Assembly.

The Liberals called for an investigation, raising “an appearance of conflict of interest.” Québec solidaire is also preparing a letter of complaint which will be submitted to the commissioner, confirmed the deputy for Rosemont Vincent Marissal in a press briefing on Thursday.

Mister Fitzgibbon is fairly slack ethical. He did not understand that he is no longer in the business world, that he is now a servant of the State.

Pierre Fitzgibbon participated in October in a pheasant hunting party on the private island of a group of wealthy businessmen benefiting from public subsidies. This is what an investigation by the Journal de Montréal revealed.

“This is an activity of the minister which is private and which took place over a few hours,” said the minister's press secretary, Mathieu St-Amand, by email to the Journal de Montréal. Pierre Fitzgibbon refused to grant an interview to the daily. “If you would like an interview on pheasant hunting, we are ready to speak with one of your hunting and fishing columnists,” added his attaché.

“As an answer, it’s quite runny, thank you”, reacts Vincent Marissal. “We’re on the other side of arrogance, it’s assured arrogance with a beefy forehead.”

If the value of this hunting party is over $200, Ms. Fitzgibbon had an obligation to report it to the ethics commissioner, if he did not pay the costs himself. The minister would then have had 30 days to file his statement with the commissioner, a deadline that has already passed.

The Ethics Commissioner has already investigated Pierre Fitzgibbon five times.
