Young people who spend more time at school in a day are more successful. After the addition by the government an hour of extracurricular activities per day in the high schools, the Finance minister proposes to double the ante with an additional two hours.

“If it works [one hour], what are we going to do? Two more hours! […] There is talent and there is work, too. There is nothing better than to add hours to the school to boost graduation rates,” said Eric Girard, on Thursday evening, during a speech in the margins of the presentation of the Balance of taxation from the Quebec, Longueuil, where he was the keynote speaker.

In the first budget of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ), in march 2019, the minister Girard announced that by 2023, all public secondary schools in Quebec offer a time after school free of charge more per day for students, sporting activities, arts or homework help.

As of September, the quarter of students were able to take advantage of this measure aimed at boosting student retention, that is, 140 schools out of around 600. It now appears that nearly half of the 317 845 young people of secondary public throughout Quebec have access to that extra hour free.

In front of a group of tax experts and economists, a profession he held before becoming a politician, the minister, Girard spoke of his “equation” to “create wealth in the long term” and fill in 25 years, the delay of the standard of living in Quebec compared to the rest of Canada and especially Ontario.

Its four “pillars” to get there are more education, more workers, more private investment and less debt.

With a Québécois “15 to 20 % less wealthy than the canadian average,” and “15 to 20 % less productive than the canadian average,” Mr. Girard sees in the graduation rate a success factor for collective crucial. Rate, especially in need to increase in boys francophone, he says.

And as “vectors” of a better education, he expects the program to Act early with the toddlers, the establishment of the nursery four years, the renovation and maintenance of schools, as well as this time in more extracurricular activities in high school.

“Me, my favorite, my favorite hour is one hour more per day at the secondary level. The secondary audience! Because this hour more per day using the public school to compete with the private school”, says the minister of Finance.

The government caquiste disburses $ 455 million for the realization of this project in five years, including $ 32 million for the school year 2019-2020.

“It is of economists. If it works, that is what we will do? Two more hours! I get standing ovations in the schools when I tell them that… […] That is my favorite and the one we are talking about the least. In the national Assembly, we talked about all the time of the mother four years, all the time, all the time. Kindergarten four years ago, this is a vector” among others, has summarized the minister.
