GoFundMe cuts crowdfunding Crowdfunding of convoy organizers

GoFundMe Removes “Freedom Convoy” Trucker Crowdfunding Campaign.

“Given the evolution of this situation, no other funds will be directly distributed to the organizers of the Freedom Convoy”, wrote the crowdfunding platform in a press release, Friday evening, on the eve of a gathering of truckers in Quebec.

“GoFundMe supports peaceful protest and we believe that was the intent of the Freedom Convoy 2022 fundraiser when it was created. We now have evidence from law enforcement that the previously peaceful protest has turned into an occupation, with police reports of violence and other illegal activity.”

The platform says it reviewed the facts in Ottawa and spoke with local law enforcement and city officials before making its decision. The fundraiser, she assesses, violates her terms of use which prohibit the promotion of violence and harassment. As a result, the campaign was scrapped.

Earlier this week, $1 million was released for the movement that said it wanted to stage a peaceful protest in Ottawa.

“Count given the evolution of this situation, no other funds will be directly distributed to the organizers of the Freedom Convoy – we will work with the organizers to send all remaining funds to credible and established charities chosen by the organizers of Freedom Convoy 2022 and verified by GoFundMe,” the statement read.
