Remember that the CAP aquatic facilities showed several signs of deterioration. However, the Cégep renovation project had not been selected as part of the program to support sports and recreational facilities.

“We welcomed the grant with great joy, but also with a sigh of relief. The maintenance and repair of a swimming pool may seem like a trivial operation (…) That said, when sustainability is threatened, we quickly realize the importance it has for all the communities that benefit from it. », Indicated the general director of Cégep de Sherbrooke, Marie-France Bélanger.

About 80% of aquatic activities are intended for the general population. In addition to serving the college community, the CAP infrastructure serves 2,500 students from schools in the region, in addition to training 350 lifeguards and water safety monitors annually.

The work will be launched in the winter of 2022 and the site will be completed for the start of the 2022 school year. By then, the institution will have to hire the professionals and carry out the plans and specifications, in addition to granting the renovation contract.

The facilities will be renovated and improved, and energy efficiency will be improved. Management wishes to add windows to take advantage of natural light. A reflection will be initiated to reduce the impact of the work on the use of the swimming pool, also noted Ms. Bélanger, who in passing underlined the work of the former mayor of Sherbrooke Jean Perrault in this file.

“The urgency of the situation was heard by my colleague Jean-François Roberge (Minister of Education). The financial contributions of the City of Sherbrooke and the Cégep de Sherbrooke have made a big difference, ”underlined Ms. Hébert, recalling that the repair of the swimming pool was part of his electoral commitments during the provincial campaign in 2018. The mayor de Sherbrooke, Steve Lussier, recalled the financial involvement of the City of Sherbrooke, stressing that this work will have positive effects on the entire community.

Without the provincial government subsidy, the Cégep de Sherbrooke would have been forced to either close the swimming pool, opt for a loan by-law to carry out the work or find another source of funding.

Despite the deterioration of the aquatic basin, there is no question of closing while awaiting the facelift. The Cégep team maintains the infrastructures and monitors them, reminds the management.

The project, initially valued at $ 4.3M a few years ago, has been revised to $ 4.4M.
