Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel: smile, you are being watched!
The major works underway in the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine bridge-tunnel will last at least three years.
To encourage motorists to respect the speed limit in the work area for major repairs to the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel, speeding can be detected by mobile photo radars.
“Upstream signage will inform road users. The sign to this effect uses, on an orange background, the pictogram used elsewhere on the road network to announce the possible presence of a photo radar, “warned the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MTQ) in a press release. .
This surveillance will be carried out on Highway 25 southbound at exit 4, towards Souligny Avenue in the city center. Still on Autoroute 25, photo radars will be installed in the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel heading north and south. On Highway 40, radar surveillance will be increased in a westerly and easterly direction at the level of the Île-aux-Tourtes bridge which connects Vaudreuil-Dorion to Senneville.
The intercepted drivers who will be driving exceeding the speed limit established at all times in the roadwork zone, i.e. 50 km/h, will therefore be subject to a double fine. However, the owner of the vehicle who commits the offense will not have any demerit points added to his file.
This measure was implemented by the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable (MTQ ), having noted that non-compliance with the speed limit persists despite the presence of signs, and this, particularly outside of rush hour.
In 2021, the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) noted that of the 845 victims of automobile accidents that occurred in a road construction site or on the outskirts, 9 people died.
