If he were a happy man in the Quartier des shows on Wednesday, that's Corneille. We would have been unless we were, with a large Bell Francos stage for him, his five musicians, his 12 (!) choristers and, at their feet, a Place des Festivals filled, filled, filled with people, in absolutely the temperature radiant from a perfect summer evening.

No kidding. The crowd that awaited Corneille on Wednesday surpassed the already very honorable crowd that had cheered sensation Hubert Lenoir the day before. Behind the scenes, the organization of the Francos even whispered that Corneille had generated one of the largest audiences since the start of the festival, Friday June 10.

The mass stretched all along rue Jeanne-Mance, to Sainte-Catherine and perhaps a bit beyond, and reacted with aplomb, shaking their arms vigorously at the slightest known refrain from one of the most soul of our singers, whom we have cherished for twenty years already (it was in 2002 that the opus Because we come from far away revealed his palpable talent ). There was a festive atmosphere with the scent of Saint-Jean evening.

En toute-simplicite

The album he is currently defending , launched in late March, is called Pink Ink, and there was no mistaking it on Wednesday: the flashing pink sweater and jacket that the R&B guy wore said everything about his intentions. We were going to see life in pink in the next hour and a half, and it was indeed a compendium of good humor and sparkling joy. Big funpeaceful signed Corneille!

The artist, who will be coach for the next version of La Voix, in the winter of 2023, with Marjo, Marc Dupré and Mario Pelchat, played the card of simplicity for its saucette at the Francos (if we exclude this spectacular number of choristers, which even beats the pawn of some megastars Americans passing through the Bell Centre!). Corneille spoke very little between his titles, preferring to let the music speak for itself. He danced, hopped, laughed, and smiled, smiled and smiled again, for example. He even wished happy birthday to a certain Emma who was trying to catch his attention in the front rows.

Corneille a assembled a first bouquet of flowers drawn from its established repertoire (Hope in stereo,The heights of our lives,The day after the end of the world,Fathers, men and brothers,Everyone), before inviting Les Louanges (which he had himself spotted on the Internet, and which he had predicted on Twitter five years ago) to push their joint piece, Crash, as a duo. A more than happy union.

After which, Corneille continued his journey with something new (New world, New power), then repeated with other classics (because we are talking about classics when the course winds its way over two decades), à la Alone in the world. The horde of worshipers became respectful, solemnly accompanying their host on the magnificent Le bon Dieu est une femme. So much so that the main interested party lengthened the ballad by a few lines, for the simple pleasure of listening to the spectators shouting in his place. It was beautiful.

Dashny Jules, a graduate of Star Académie 2021, came to accompany him on the aptly named Pink ink, and we got I was then able to see that, in terms of presence and dynamism, the next generation is assured.

Alas, alas, the sound was a tad lacking on the immortal With class, one of the most beautiful attempts at flirting in Quebec song. “When I saw you, I first noticed your eyes before your buttocks… Na!, OK, I admit, it's not true, I confess!” scream with all their soul. The charm still works!

On the home stretch, Rêves de stars (and its sea of swinging arms in a perfectly synchronized rhythm) and the vitaminized Pause (try to resist the urge to dance, to see!) led to the “Pa pa pa pa” of Because we come from far away, buried in howls of joy near Place des Arts.

It was a grateful Corneille, who often seemed moved, who concluded his round as 10:25 p.m. approached, with a quiet encore of the verses twisting the sweet Comme un fils,Qu' do you make yourself and the irresistible Happiness. The flame of the Place des Festivals had not weakened, the cell phones continued to rise high, balloons still flew over the heads, and we suspected that Corneille would perhaps explode with fullness shortly. Well done, and well done for you, indescribable gentleman.

The 33rd Francos de Montréal continues until Saturday, June 18.
