Metro grocery stores donated $50 million in food in 2022
The Metro company donated the equivalent of $50 million in food to food banks in Quebec and Ontario in 2022. This figure represents 9 million meals or 4.5 million kilos of food. The company also donated $5.5 million in financial contributions to various causes.
From 2016 to 2022, Metro's Récupartage initiative, which aims to fight against food waste, has recovered more than 23 million kilos of food, or 45 million meals, through the various grocery stores affiliated with the Metro brand.
“We are committed to contributing to the economic and social well-being of the communities where we are present,” says Marie-Claude Bacon, Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications at Metro Inc.
Last November and December, Metro launched the first edition of its Ensemble en santé campaign, which raised an additional $2.2 million in donations to fight food insecurity .
According to Food Banks Canada's HungerCount, nearly 500,000 Quebecers visited a food bank in March 2022, a 43% increase over visits in 2019.
