CRITICAL / If the new songs of Patrick Watson, are born in pain, they resonate like so many bubbles of comfort. The effect observed at the listening of the album “Wave” has been increased tenfold on the boards of the salle Louis-Fréchette of the Grand Théâtre, on Sunday evening, during a performance visually neat and musically impeccable.

The Montrealer was published this autumn a sixth album, personal safe, which he has bandaged up his wounds music. Cashing in quick the loss of her mother, of a loving relationship and another professional, Watson was a moment carried away by this wave as suggested by the title of this new collection of songs. At once intimate and loaded of intensity, they come to us fully (and generously) on the scene as the waters seem to have calmed down.

Intense in its interpretations — and usually cabotin in his interventions between the latter — Patrick Watson has taken to the road with several of his collaborators in the studio. Obviously, the chemistry operates at full speed. The accuracy is waiting for you in the moments of great intimacy as in these crescendos are intense, many on Wave (the beautiful Broken, in particular, was enough to give chills Sunday).

The voice still soft, Patrick Watson is supported by the choristers Ariel Engle (Strength, which has heated the boards to him on Sunday) and Erika Angell (Thus Owls). Their collaboration gives rise to spectacular weddings voice : Wild Flower has given a powerful example, just as Melody Black, more smoothly.

If the new songs get here the place of the lion, Watson allowed himself a few flashbacks much appreciated by the public. Think of Big Bird in a Small Cage that gave a tone festive at the beginning of the recall, to Hearts, to the bracket francophone I will let you of words or Slip Into Your Skin.

Everything unfolds in a scenic environment in chiaroscuro, where the prisms whirling are used in some reflectors, and sometimes parts of lighting. Nothing flashy, here. It seeks rather to create a bubble intimate… and Left any off, as did Patrick Watson to say goodbye to his fans, in the single glow of a flashlight, the sound of Lighthouse.

The Force

“You are so wise. What a great listen… For the first part, this is cool!” has to be a time chantonné Force (Ariel Engle of his real name), for the benefit of a half hour that she has offered before Patrick Watson.
