It is out of the question for the leader of the Parti Québécois (PQ), Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, that the structure of the Eastern REM be aerial, learned Metro. And not just for the portion located downtown: the PQ would bury the REM de l’Est along its entire length. The political formation takes this position for reasons of “social acceptability”.

“After spending a lot of time in the field and speaking with various stakeholders, we understand that social acceptability has been set aside in the current project”, denounces the leader of the PQ, Paul St- Pierre Plamondon, in interview with Métro. “We wasted four years with a project that does not resemble the population.”

For an entirely underground REM to be feasible, the proposed routes will have to be reviewed. The PQ intends to return “during the campaign” with more specific proposals on this subject. In any case, the project must see the light of day, we insist.

“What I fear is that the CAQ will find excuses to dawdle for another four years,” said Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon. It takes someone to make sure it happens if the CAQ ever gets elected.”

If we are the government, rest assured that this project will be the first priority in the first month, that there will be no delay, if only for a matter of historical justice, to cause of under-investment in east Montreal compared to west Montreal.

Protests

The past year has been the scene of several demonstrations in eastern Montreal against the construction of an aerial REM, between Robert-Bourassa Boulevard, downtown, to Pointe-aux-Trembles. A petition to postpone its conception had accumulated nearly 1,500 signatures in the National Assembly.

Some fear the potential visual impact of an aerial REM and the vibrations that could emanate from the structure. “We saw it with the REM de l'Ouest, the CAQ boasts of having a profitable project, but everything has been divided in an unskillful way,” accuses Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon.

According to CDPQ Infra, burying the REM downtown would be very difficult. This would entail risks of subsidence for skyscrapers and collapse for metro lines. The construction site to achieve such a thing would also be much longer.

The Eastern REM will have 32 km of double tracks and 23 stations, seven of which will be intermodal. Its driverless electric train will create a network connected to the metro, the Est train and the future Pie-IX bus rapid service.

Justice for the East

It’s in the riding of Bourget, in the east of Montreal, that Paul St-Pierre Plamondon will seek election. Caquiste Richard Campeau currently sits there. In this sector of the island, the deputies of the party in power are “ghostly”, accuses the leader of the PQ.

“The population of the East has been able to assess in four years what this implies of ;have a member of the CAQ. They do not defend their interests, they only defend the interests of the party, ”he says.

If I am appointed Prime Minister, my commitment to the REM is clear. Otherwise, I will be a strong and audible voice to defend the citizens of the East.

Other important issues for the PQ in view of the elections will be the situation of hospitals, the “retreat in transport” and the quality of the air.
