Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles in turn bans Airbnbs

After Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve (MHM), it’ Borough of Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Tremble (RDP-PAT) to ban Airbnbs throughout its territory.

At the borough council on Tuesday evening, elected officials voted on a first draft by-law aimed at prohibiting short-term rentals for commercial purposes throughout the borough.

“There is only one area where this is going to be allowed. These are medians on Sherbrooke Street, but the City owns them. It's a bit to avoid legal challenges,” said the borough councilor in Pointe-aux-Trembles, Marie-Claude Baril, however.

As at MHM, an owner of RDP-PAT who wishes to rent out their accommodation during their holidays will be authorized to do so. The owners must have a number from the Corporation de l'industrie touristique du Québec (CITQ), in accordance with the new Law on tourist accommodation.

While it was until now allowed to rent any type of residence in the RDP-PAT on a short-term basis, there were however few requests . However, it’s the initiative of MHM elected officials to adopt regulations restricting them that inspired those of RDP-PAT to do the same.

“We were already thinking about that. [But with] the fact that Airbnb is removing all illegal listings, we wanted to make sure that those people who had their listings removed don't come and get a permit while we don't have any regulations yet, “said Marie-Claude Baril.
