SAAQ: more time before seizure of a vehicle for expired licence

Geneviève Guilbault

Faced with long delays at the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), the seizure of the vehicle of a driver with a license that has not been renewed is suspended for 90 days by the Ministry of Transport (MTQ).

The measure concerns permits that expired between January 25 and March 9, 2023, announced Geneviève Guilbault, Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.

The validity of driving licenses had already been extended for three months, while the transition to a digital system at the SAAQ led to many problems and endless queues. It will still be necessary that the drivers concerned have renewed their license by June 7, 2023, the date on which the measure will be lifted.

“This measure aims to prevent the license holders concerned from being sanctioned in the event of interception”, explains the MTQ in a press release.
