SMS service for young people with an eating disorder

A text messaging service has been set up to help young Quebeckers who have a difficult relationship with their bodies and food.

Available from April 1st, the new text help service was created by Anorexie and Boulimie Québec (ANEB), in collaboration with Bell cause for the cause and the Casse-Tête Foundation. It is particularly aimed at adolescents and young adults aged 14 to 20 years, a period conducive to the development of anorexia and bulimia, says ANEB in a statement released Tuesday.

By writing a text message to 1 800 630-0907, youth can get help from a caregiver, says the organization. The service will be available from Monday to Friday, from 11h to 15h30. “Users will be able to ask questions, get support or references, whether for them, a friend, or a family member,” says ANEB.

Outside of these hours, young people will be able to benefit from the other services of the organization already in place, such as the hotline (same number as for the SMS service) and the chat ( anebquebec.com ).

The organization believes that the text-based helpdesk service will allow outreach workers to reach youth who do not use the online help line or chat service. According to him, the use of texting with young people “seems to create a feeling of confidence and proximity, and quickly.”
