Dominique Anglade's succession within the Liberal Party may be assured, but his constituency will become vacant. And Québec solidaire sees the situation as an opportunity.

The candidate for the left-wing party in Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne, Guillaume Cliche-Rivard, will try his luck in the by-elections for the riding. He is said to have already submitted his candidacy for the nomination for the upcoming election.

Mr. Cliche-Rivard was defeated by Dominique Anglade by less than 3,000 votes in the general ballot. Some experts believe he could be elected this time. This would allow Québec solidaire to count on 12 deputies, the minimum required for a political party to be recognized by the National Assembly.

Guillaume Cliche-Rivard was president of the Quebec Association of Immigration Lawyers.

Dominique Anglade will retain her post as MP until 1 December. Marc Tanguay is acting chief. He is the Member of Parliament for the riding of LaFontaine, in the east of Montreal.
