TikTok chef Laurent Dagenais publishes a book that makes you hungry
The cookbook market in Quebec seems insaturable. A little new one has just appeared: Always hungry! by Laurent Dagenais. Star of TikTok, followed by more than 1.4million people, the chef adds to the videos the printed book, always with the aim of inspiring people behind the cauldrons and transmitting to them the pleasure of cooking.
Before finding success on TikTok, Laurent Dagenais worked for many years in gourmet restaurants in Montreal and Western Canada. Following a snowboarding accident in which he broke his wrist, he put his chef career on hold and found himself working as a manager for the Warehouse restaurant group.

While he no longer cooks professionally, he starts making short videos to keep his passion alive. On Facebook and YouTube, he posts cannabis-based recipes in video format that don't do very well. On the other hand, he realizes that people love his storiesin which we see him preparing good meals.
“A 20-minute video in which each step of the recipe is explained in detail, this is no longer relevant. People scroll so fast now, they need fast videos, without lengths or flat parts”, believes the content creator.
His girlfriend suggests that he create a TikTok account and offers to help him make better videos. “I wouldn't be here without her,” he said. Virality and success came next, says Laurent, leading him to give up his job to live exclusively from his content creation on social networks.

The beginning of the suite
As a chef, Laurent has always wanted to one day have a recipe book in his name and it is now done. In his videos, nothing is left to chance, from the music to the taste of the dishes, through the lighting or his look, it is authenticity that prevails. In the same way, he hopes that his recipe book, developed with the help of photographer and designer friends, reflects his style and personality.
His inspirations being very diverse, he describes his book as being “a mixture of everything”. “I can do a bit of all types of cuisine, be influenced by the seasons or by a trip I took recently. In the book, for example, there are things more Quebecois, others Italian, others more Mexican. I go there to feeling”, he says.
In Always hungry!there are thus a total of 70 varied recipes. Cucumber gazpacho, Montecristo sandwich, beef tartare with bourgots, flan… several have already been successful on TikTok while others are completely new.
Added to this new book are other upcoming projects such as the creation of merch (tuque, apron, cap) or even collaborations to create an olive oil and a hot sauce in his image. And his ambitions don't stop there: “The game plan is to quietly go into Ricardo mode,” says the cook.
