In addition, food waste also poses an economic burden. Metro recently reported that the food price inflationary trend will be the strongest in 30 years in 2022.

It is estimated that an average Canadian family annually wastes $1100 worth of food that could have been consumed. With food price inflation, we have a double interest in paying attention to this issue.

What to do to avoid waste?

The Love Food Hate Waste Canada campaign offers some tips to avoid food waste and reduce the costs to the planet and the wallet.

These tips are divided into three categories: planning, using everything possible and preserving food.

From the outset, it is important to plan your meals and shop wisely result. In this way, we only buy the food we need and we increase the chances of using everything we put in the basket.

Then, we simply have to consume everything before the date food expiration. Also, the consumer should use a whole food when possible.

“For example, for broccoli, we will often take only the head while the foot can also be used in several ways, as in a soup,” explains RECYC-QUÉBEC Vice-President of Operations Performance, Sophie Langlois-Blouin. Moreover, fruits and vegetables are the most wasted food categories, she adds.

Finally, on the awareness campaign website, it is possible to find a guide conservation for each type of food.
