The door – spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Gilles Payer, explains that the railway nature of the bridge is the main reason why it was closed as a precaution. The Victoria Bridge will be the only bridge closed preventively today.
“This bridge is shared between cars and the train, and there is currently a significant accumulation of ice on the structures. from the bridge. Since the train generates tremors, there is a serious risk of ice sheets falling on the cars. It was therefore more prudent to close it preventively before accidents occur, ”he says, adding that no specific time is announced for its reopening.
Power Outages
In addition to the closure of the bridge, the ice storm caused its share of power outages on the island of Montreal. Around 5 p.m., some 300,000 Hydro-Québec customers were without electricity.
On Twitter, it is specified that the power outages are affecting the operation of certain traffic lights and that it is necessary to make a stop mandatory at all times.
Plusieurs pannes électriques sont présentement en cours dans la région. Si le feux de circulation ne fonctionne pas, on doit faire un arrêt obligatoire pour la sécurité de tous.
